Mobile Over-The-Air Phone Sync - An Introduction

One exciting new capability for ChaosHost subscribers is an ability to sync your Contact, Calendar and Task data OVER THE AIR to your phone.

What does this require?

Besides a ChaosHost account, you must also have a supported phone that supports Exchange Synchronization.

Your DATABASE RECORD COUNTS and SIZE is also a factor.  If you want to sync more than 2000 contacts or 2000 appointments or 2000 tasks (depending on which data types your device supports), you should look to a more direct sync method with your PC rather than attempting to sync over-the-air.  This is not a hard record limit we enforce (there are users with slightly more records), but we know users with larger databases are more likely to have problems getting it all to work reliably.

Please note that anyone using this Mobile Over-The-Air Sync should have good back-up habits to protect your data from any unforeseen problems this sync process could cause.

This is NOT a complete list of devices, as we are not supporting these models specifically. Rather, we support the Exchange ActiveSync method for synchronizing and these phones have been tested out as supporting it from their end, too.  Any other phones, if they support Exchange ActiveSync, they should work with ChaosHost also.

How does it work?

Supported phones have synchronization options that can enable it to talk directly to ChaosHost.com. It can use a Wi-Fi connection or a cell-service internet connection, but the faster the connection, the better!

This form of Mobile Phone Sync DOES NOT REQUIRE YOU TO CONNECT TO A COMPUTER to perform a sync! Instead, it can sync "over the air" directly to our ChaosHost servers from wherever you have Internet access.

For the initial sync, it will transfer your complete contact database and any appointments from 60 days ago out into the future.  Depending on the amount of data you have, this first sync can take a while and it is a good idea to have your device plugged in so it is not using all your battery power!

After the first sync, your phone can "check in" periodically to pass any new changes back and forth.  New data you add to your phone or to ChaosHost.com should get passed back and forth.

Does it cost extra?

No, this a normal part of our normal ChaosHost.com services as part of the value we provide!

Do Tasks sync?

ChaosHost does support Task synchronization on our end, but not all devices support it from their end. Many devices such as older iPhones and Androids support Contacts and Calendar synchronization only.  If yours is a limited device, you might need to shop for alternate programs which can synchronize tasks. For Android, this could be a program from the Market called RoadSync.  For old iPhones that cannot upgrade to iOS5, this could be a program from the App Store called Moxier Tasks.

Does it transfer the Notes I've entered?

If you have a Windows Mobile device, it can transfer notes on Contacts, Appointments and Tasks, but it can only send the notes one direction: from ChaosHost to your device.

For other devices, including iPhones, the notes on items are transferred both ways, allowing you to edit and add notes on ChaosHost AND on your device.

Will you support Mail synchronization?

No, as our ChaosHost service does not offer email storage or synchronization at all.  However, your smartphone should be able to have multiple accounts, so it should still sync with your normal email providers for email while this service focuses just on your contacts and appointments (and tasks if you device supports it).
